On 18 September a terrified young lamb arrived into care. Stevie, a dear little boy, was blind and, understandably so, was incredibly fearful of what was happening to him. His fear was exacerbated by the fact that he was feeling very unwell with a temperature of 41.1. Medication and cooling towels did little to relieve his discomfort, bringing his temperature down to only 40.6 – still very high for someone so young.
Stevie would walk in agitated circles, calling out with a strained, high-pitched cry. To his carer’s relief, Stevie would calm instantly at her touch that obviously made him feel less alone and afraid. A tense night was had by all as Stevie would get into a corner of his cot with his neck vertical and his head hung back.
Luckily for Stevie he had the attention of our carer’s entire family who gave him supportive care throughout the night. It was determined by one of our wonderful vets that he had a severe case of joint ill and sepsis. Due to being left untreated the sepsis is what caused cataracts on both eyes, leading to the blindness. With IV fluids, pain relief and penicillin administered, Stevie was able to return home. Although he seems to react to light, our vets do not expect him to regain his sight.
Stevie is a beautiful soul who is putting all his trust in his human family and his new lamb friends.
